In conjunction with the Chicago-based design firm Austin-Aecom, McCauley turned an abandoned Misericordia home for children into the LEED Silver status Donald Marquez School. By installing three rooftop units with energy recovery wheels, VAV and electric reheat, McCauley made sure that the building was ready for the start of the 2007 school year. The Donald Marquez School was named after officer Donald J. Marquez, who was killed in the line of duty on March 18, 2002. The school is made possible by the United Neighborhood Organization (UNO), an organization that works to advance the Hispanic community in Chicago, and the Chicago Police Department (CPD). The Marquez School will serve over 500 students, and is the second UNO school in the Brighton Park/Archer Heights neighborhood, where severe school overcrowding has become a serious problem.
